The Open Provincial Championship Regatta was held on September 17-18 at Sibbald Point Provincial Park.
It was very cold in the morning when everybody arrived at the boat launch area, and there was almost no wind. We rigged our boats, optimistic that the day would warm up and some wind would appear.
We decided to have an early lunch on shore. After lunch, our patience was rewarded as the sun came out and brought some light winds. Not a lot, but enough to race with. Lorne and Hanzo went out in Charger to set up a course, and we all ventured out on the water.
There were plenty of shifts and puffs to keep us on our toes.
We had a really close start for this race.
Marika made some gains on Heather during the last circuit, but not enough to steal the lead.
Most of the participants met at Hanzo and Ineke's campsite for a potluck supper. We'll need more wind on Sunday after all those deserts!
Sunday's weather was warm, sunny, and there was lots of wind. Since the wind was from the southeast, we didn't have to contend with the large waves Lake Simcoe is famous for.
Marika and Aleid were over the start line early, and had to double back below the line to restart.
Place | Sail No. | Crew | Race 1 | Race 2 | Race 3 | Race 4 | Race 5 | Race 6 | Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 43456 | Aleid Brendeke | 4 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 8 |
2 | 16562 | Heather Pugh | 1 | 4 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 10 |
3 | 29647 | Mat Bienczyk | 2 | 5 | 6 | 3 | 1 | 2 | 13 |
4 | 51161 | Marika Beaumont | 3 | 3 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 16 |
5 | 53050 | Stephen Steel | 5 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 4 | 5 | 20 |
6 | 14351 | Les Bienczyk | 6 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 6 | 27 |
Note: Since everyone sailed single-handed, no penalty was assessed for doing so in the points total. Each sailor's worst result was thrown-out when calculating the points total. Sadly, no one actually qualified for the Provincial Championship trophy (as this requires a double-handed crew).
Many thanks to Lorne and Hanzo for serving as the race committee, and to Derek for helping with launching and retrieving Charger.
